Curriculum

At Market Rasen Pre School we believe our children are the curriculum. This means they guide us in how we support them to grow and blossom into the best versions of themselves. We do this by establishing close and meaningful relationships with each child, creating bonds that enable us to extend their interests and learning opportunities in our daily provision, following their interests.

Our curriculum is designed to complement the needs, abilities, and interests of every individual child.

We skilfully combine our approach to every individuals needs to support them in achieving their goals. We are inclusive in all that we do and follow children’s interests responding skilfully ‘in-the-moment’ as well as by enhancing their learning through ‘teachable moments’ with some planned activities to aid their development.

Documents we work with are:

  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) – statutory.
  • Development Matters – Non statutory guidance.

There are seven areas of learning and development within the Early Years curriculum.

 Prime areas of learning

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication and language development
  • Physical development

Specific areas of learning

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

We will celebrate the children’s achievements and find out what’s going on in their local community through good parent partnerships as well as good partnerships with our local community. We will also celebrate a range of festivals and share special occasions and events with the children throughout the year, teaching children what is happening in the world around them ‘outside of their window, not only what they see in the mirror.’

We aim to teach our children British values, modelling friendly behaviour and teaching them to show respect and kindness to everyone around them.

In play, we believe in allowing children to take risks, test their own ideas, develop the ability to cope with the ups and downs of life, solve problems and build resilience and strength.

We believe that the learning environment is central to how children develop so therefore planning is necessary if we are to maximise opportunities for them. The planned environment covers all areas of the EYFS to ensure they can access all areas of development, but also make their own choices of how to use the environment in their own way leaving the way they choose to use the environment up to them.

Our team of practitioners meet half termly to ensure the environment is meeting the needs of all children and making changes where needed as well as discussing what is working well based on all individuals needs.

We use a variety of learning resources and styles to meet the needs of every individual; One of which approaches in the Reggio Emilia approach. We offer loose parts as part of our play environments so we can teach the children how to think, not what to think. For example, offering baskets of loose parts such as log slices, stones and pinecones, encourages the children to think how they could use them as food for a role-play kitchen, as oppose to a plastic toy cucumber that could only be a cucumber and could minimise their imagination skills to develop.

We also offer a range of unique and enriching experiences to enhance the children development further, for example, swimming from April through to October, walks around the local town and shops – and going out on trips using our own pre school minibus – to the woods, pumpkin patch, Donna nook nature reserve, and more!!
